These fundamental ideas about the mechanics of laser behavior underlie the uses of the lasing phenomenon, which, as we all know, has yielded momentous impacts on the twentieth century in many fields beyond science: To show that the statistical parent distribution that must be used to describe the photon counts from a laser are dependent upon the reference time scale.

To prove that the parent distributions for such counting experiments are the Poisson distribution for time scales longer than the coherence time of the laser, and the Bose-Einstein formula for time scales shorter than the coherence time of a He-Ne laser. To prove whether or not the different longitudinal lasing modes within an argon laser are internally temporally related.

We will reach goals 1 and 2 with a standard low-intensity photon counting experiment, using a He-Ne laser, a DC motor, a polarizer, a PMT photomultiplier tube , and a PC to list the major parts.
