Project Summary Our motivation for undertaking this project is to be totally truthful to perform a challenging yet not insurmountable experiment in the hopes of demonstrating our ability to carry out an experiment using the many invaluable methods of experimental physics, the related skills for which we have been honing since the first day of Modern Physics Lab. Our interest in this project comes as a fusion of our interests in both lasers and statistics. These fundamental ideas about the mechanics of laser behavior underlie the uses of the lasing phenomenon, which, as we all know, has yielded momentous impacts on the twentieth century in many fields beyond science: To show that the statistical parent distribution that must be used to describe the photon counts from a laser are dependent upon the reference time scale.

To prove that the parent distributions for such counting experiments are the Poisson distribution for time scales longer than the coherence time of the laser, and the Bose-Einstein formula for time scales shorter than the coherence time of a He-Ne laser. To prove whether or not the different longitudinal lasing modes within an argon laser are internally temporally related.

We will reach goals 1 and 2 with a standard low-intensity photon counting experiment, using a He-Ne laser, a DC motor, a polarizer, a PMT photomultiplier tube , and a PC to list the major parts. This will serve to show a fit to the Poisson distribution for a sampling time longer than the coherence time. The effect of this disk will be to generate a field of pseudothermal radiation with randomly varying intensity and phase, thereby emulating the extremely small time scale behavior imposed on a laser by the uncertainty principle.
